Susanville, Basque, Georgian Fire, Asian Tempest, & Inchelium Red
Pictured are the five garlic varieties we are growing this season. All garlic (with the exception of elephant garlic which is not garlic, but a leek) are from the same species, Allium sativum. Hundreds of distinct cultivars exist and are organized under ten strains. The five garlic varieties we are growing represent 4 of the 10 strains: Asiatic (Asian Tempest), Artichoke (Incelium Red & Susanville), & Porcelan (Gerogian Fire), and Turban (Basque).
Originating in South-central Asia, garlic has been cultivated for thousands of years. It is my favorite crop to grow.
